During her stay as artist in residence at the Museum Kunst der Westküste in Alkersum/Föhr, Rome and Berlin-based artist Susanne Kessler came across a drawing of a line that concealed a spectacular story: the odyssey of the three-masted ship ‘Susanna’ as it sailed around Cape Horn under the command of a captain from Föhr.

In 1905, the full-rigged ship encountered storms around Cape Horn that lasted 99 days – making the passage one of the toughest, most brutal and bravest voyages in international maritime history to this day.

Susanne Kessler took the drawing and the story as the starting point for her major artistic work. Her models, objects, drawings, videos and pictorial works, which lead to the overall ensemble, the impressive floor installation ‘Odissea’ and the accompanying wall installations “Föhr” and ‘South America’, refer to the endless number of painful odysseys in past and present times.
