200 exciting years have shaped the small town of Wyk on the North Sea island of Föhr as a seaside resort and health resort, earning it the status of a unique wellness destination for guests from all over the world. As the oldest seaside resort on the west coast of Schleswig-Holstein and also the oldest seaside resort in Denmark, Wyk auf Föhr plays a prominent role in the history of bathing culture and spa tourism. The famous North Sea Sanatorium founded in 1898 by Dr Karl Gmelin was able to meet the highest standards of a health resort in the era of the life reform movement. This publication presents more than 250 paintings, watercolours, prints, postcards, historical photographs, advertising posters and travel guides. It also provides insights into the development of bathing fashion. All of the objects and sources tell largely forgotten or newly discovered stories about the seaside resort, which has lost none of its appeal as a holiday and health resort to this day.
