MKdW GUEST EXHIBITION AT THE MUSÉE OCÉANOGRAPHIQUE DE MONACO

As a guest at the Musée océanographique de Monaco, the MKdW is presenting an exclusive selection of high-calibre paintings and contemporary photographs from its art collection. Visitors embark on a journey along the North Sea coast and experience the role that the sea has always played and continues to play in the cultural connections between the island of Föhr, northern Germany, Denmark, the Netherlands and Norway.

The artists draw attention to the sea, a fascinating habitat that stands for depth and vastness, yet is threatened by human intervention. During the period when the paintings selected from the MKdW collection were created – between 1824 and 1916 – major developments took place that presented coastal residents with ever new challenges: For a long time, the sea was the basis of people's livelihoods. It was not until the end of the 19th century that beaches were increasingly perceived as recreational and leisure spaces in the wake of changing social conditions and increased prosperity. This change found its way into the artists' motifs. In correspondence with this, four contemporary photographic positions continue the dialogue into the present day.

Among the artists represented are Otto H. Engel, Joakim Eskildsen, Riitta Ikonen and Karoline Hjorth, Peder Severin Krøyer, Max Liebermann, Georg Anton Rasmussen, Laurits Tuxen and Mila Teshaieva.
