Anna Ancher (1859–1935) is one of Denmark's best-known and most popular artists of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. As a member of the important Skagen artists' colony, she played a key role in the development of realistic and impressionistic trends in Scandinavian painting around 1900.

The only one of the artists born in Skagen, her work was characterised by a particularly innovative use of light and colour. Anna Ancher's depictions of light reflections and shadows in numerous genre and landscape paintings are masterful. Ahead of her time, she ultimately developed an abstract formal language. The selection of works provides comprehensive insights into Anna Ancher's social life and everyday events in Skagen.

In 2020 and 2021, the Danish museums Statens Museum for Kunst in Copenhagen and Skagens Kunstmuseer, as well as the Norwegian Lillehammer Art Museum, will present the most comprehensive Anna Ancher solo exhibitions to date. The MKdW is continuing this tour with around 80 oil paintings and oil sketches. Boasting the largest collection of works by the Skagen artists' colony in Germany, the exhibition brings Anna Ancher's work to a wider audience.
